Frequently asked questions

What is a foot care nurse ?

Foot care nurses are registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs) who are registered and in good standing with the provincial regulatory body. In addition to their nursing program, foot care nurses undergo specialized training by completing a foot care course. As part of holistic nursing care, a foot care nurse conducts a lower limb assessment when providing foot care to evaluate skin integrity.

During this assessment, the foot care nurse assumes a medical responsibility to report any identified medical issues to the client and their caregivers. With the client’s permission, the foot care nurse will also notify their family doctor, ensuring a collaborative approach to comprehensive patient care. This commitment reflects the dedication of foot care nurses to ensuring the overall health and well-being of their clients.

Why is it important to see a foot care nurse ?

Foot care is crucial for assessing injuries, diseases, cuts, blisters, and circulation, among other concerns. An educated foot care nurse is adept at swiftly addressing these issues, providing valuable education to clients, and offering appropriate treatment recommendations. This proactive approach to education can help prevent further damage and maintain overall foot health.

Foot care nurses undergo additional training and education specifically focused on the anatomy and physiology of the foot and lower limbs. This specialized knowledge positions them as experts in addressing a comprehensive range of foot care needs. From nail care to health promotion and education, nursing foot care plays an integral role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals.

In summary, seeking the expertise of a foot care nurse is essential for proactive foot health management, timely intervention, and the promotion of overall well-being.

Who should see a foot care nurse ?

Everyone can benefit from the services of a Foot Care Nurse. However, certain individuals are at a higher risk and may particularly find these services valuable. Those who should consider regular visits to a foot care nurse include:

  • Those who have difficulty trimming their own nails
  • Individuals with a history of foot ulcerations
  • Those undergoing dialysis
  • Individuals with arthritis
  • Those with decreased mobility

Regular appointments with a foot care nurse are especially important for those in the mentioned categories to proactively address foot health, prevent potential complications, and maintain overall well-being.
